TEACHERS’ CONCERTS
Traditional Buddhist and new music on the Japanese flute shakuhachi in Århus and Vejle
The European Shakuhachi Society was founded in 2006. The main event of the year is a European Shakuhachi Summer School at which Japanese and European professional shakuhachi players come to teach and play concerts – and shakuhachi aficionados from all over Europe gather.
Both the concerts in Vor Frue Kirke (Our Lady Church), Århus on the 28 July and at the Vor Frelser Kirke (Our Savior Church), Vejle on 29 July 2017 will consist of a wide range of traditional solo pieces from the Komusō repertoire, called honkyoku, ensemble pieces and new composed music. In addition to shakuhachi, koto (13-stringed zither) and shamisen (3-stringed long-necked lute) will also be played. We will hear Kogetsu Maekawa, who is a recognised interpreter and teacher of Fuke sect pieces and the best shakuhachi players from Europe, including. Denmark.
The concerts are part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Danish-Japanese diplomatic relations.
